Roommates
Individuals who want to group as roommates on campus can jointly select a unit during self-selection. It requires teamwork, and all roommates should rank building and room-type preferences together before self-selection. Some tips to make the process easier:
- Choose one roommate leader to select the unit and beds for all roommates. The other roommates should stay accessible so the leader can coordinate with them during the self-selection window.
- Ensure all beds are open in the unit you would like to select.
- The leader should add all beds to their cart and assign members of the roommate group to the appropriate bed.
- Once assignments are selected, they cannot be changed. Confirm with all roommates before proceeding.
Individuals seeking a roommate to fill out a two-, three-, or four-bed apartment are welcome to use the roommate finder tool during self-selection to find like-minded individuals to room with.
How to select housing
The self-selection process enables students to manage their housing search by selecting their desired housing unit in the Housing Portal, subject to availability. Specific dates for housing selection are in the self-selection timeline below. To select a unit in Graduate Junction, visit the ACC Website. Please visit our FAQ page for answers to common questions.
Self-selection is currently closed. Applications for self-selection will open in April and selection dates will start in may (see timeline below).
1. Log on to the HOUSING PORTAL
Once you’ve explored your housing options, graduate students can log into the Housing Portal using their MIT credentials by clicking the “Login with Touchstone” button. If you are a visiting student, postdoc, or other affiliate, please follow the instructions on the login page to create an account for the first time you sign in. Once your account is created, you will click “Login with Touchstone” to access the Housing Portal.
2. Navigate to the correct self-selection application
Once you’ve accessed the portal, navigate to the “Forms” tab. Depending on your affiliation with MIT, you will select either:
- Graduate self-selection application (for enrolled MIT graduate students); or
- Visitor self-selection application (for all visitors, postdocs, and other affiliates)
3. Complete the self-selection application questions
Within the Self-Selection Application, you will be asked a series of questions, including whether you will be selecting single or family housing, as well as your roommate preferences and other initial information. You may revisit this section of the self-selection application if you need to edit your preferences.
4. Wait for the self-selection window to open to select your on-campus housing assignment
During available selection dates (below), you may participate in room selection between 10:00 am to 3:00 pm ET. Here, you will be able to view all available on-campus graduate housing units and select your preferred unit. Each unit in self-selection will have an “Earliest Available Date” listed, meaning the earliest date one can move in. Please be aware that any rooms that you add to your cart will be removed after 10 minutes of inactivity.
5. Sign Your Housing License Agreement
You can read the current license agreement and construction riders, as well as all applicable housing policies, before you sign.
Selection Periods
Self-selection was implemented in consultation with the Graduate Housing Working Group to provide graduate students greater control over what units they occupy while living on-campus. Self-selection for the next academic year is broken up into three different periods:
Self-selection Period |
Participants |
---|---|
Priority Selection |
Current residents who are no longer eligible to remain in their units, such as Warehouse residents or Sidney Pacific or Ashdown residents who were unable to renew through the renewal lottery. |
Early Selection |
Current and future residents who wish to participate as soon as self-selection is available. Early selection is a lottery-based process to manage traditionally high demand while maintaining a good experience for housing portal users. Instead of a first-come, first-served approach, eligible participants are randomly assigned access dates, ensuring a fair and equitable experience. |
Open Selection |
During this period, anyone eligible for housing will be able to participate in self-selection without date restriction. |
